Juror – Bruce Helander

Bruce Helander is an artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and has won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts.

As a curator, Helander has coordinated over eighty exhibitions of contemporary works. He has organized one-man shows for Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, John Chamberlain, Duane Hanson, Larry Poons, Jules Olitski, Dale Chihuly and Kenneth Noland, among others. Highly regarded a juror for art and museum competitions, he has served for the Philadelphia Museum and other leading institutions. He also serves as a consultant to several art fairs, including the LA Art Show.

Helander is the former Editor-in-Chief of The Art Economist magazine and has written extensively on contemporary art and is a regular featured columnist for the Huffington Post. His bestselling book, Learning to See— An Artist’s View on Contemporary Artists from Artschwager to Zakanitch, featuring forty of his favorite reviews, was an Indie Awards Finalist for excellence.

His work is in over fifty museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Smithsonian, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles.

His collages appear in The New Yorker and Palm Beach Illustrated magazines, among others.

Eligibility

This Exhibition is a National Exhibition, open to all encaustic/wax artists whether they are a member of the Encaustic Art Institute or not. However, any artist that is a member of the Encaustic Art Institute and resides in Canada or Mexico are eligible to enter. Artists may enter up to 3 images per entry for jury review. Only one (1) piece per artist may be selected for the exhibition.

Deadline for applications to JAS is August 3rd

Notification of winners go out August 24th

Deadline for shipped artwork to arrive at Gallery: 5 pm, September 19th

Deadline for artwork hand-delivered to Gallery: 5 pm, September 20th

Deadline for separate gallery label information to be emailed:  September 20th

Gallery Exhibition: October 3rd – October 31st

Opening Exhibition Reception & award announcement: Saturday October 3rd, noon to 3pm

Delivery of Art

Artwork hand-delivered to new gallery will be accepted only on September 19 & 20. between 11 – 5. No exceptions. Shipped work must arrive at the new gallery by 5 pm Saturday, September 19th. Ship artwork to the new gallery space at: 632 Aqua Fria, Santa Fe, NM 87501. We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays – plan accordingly – required signature is a good idea at this location. All work must be properly labeled on the back with: name, address, phone, email, title and price. Separate gallery label information needs to be sent to: karigorden@yahoo.com by September 20th. Label information should include: title, medium, size (h x w), artist name and state, and price. Return shipping labels are necessary. Artists are responsible for return shipping of unsold art. Any artwork without proper labeling will not be hung. Any artwork without a means to hang it, will not be hung.

Promotion

The Encaustic Art Institute will advertise the exhibition on the EAI website, blog and EAI Facebook page. Promotion will include art periodicals through the region, press releases, articles, and reviews will be distributed. A large ad in THE Magazine,  New Mexico’s best and widely distributed art magazine. Artists are encouraged to advertise their entries on their websites and networks.

AN AWARD of $500 will be given for Best of Show.

The Encaustic Art Institute is a non-profit 501C3. The Encaustic Art Institute is located in Santa Fe New Mexico with 4800 square feet of gallery space.
